The Camino, Stage 14 — June 11, 2025: As Eiras to Albergueria (19 km)

12 - 20°C — Rain-Rain-Rain-Cloud

By Jim

When we had supper with Frank and Yuric at Casa Terra Alma last night, we had not decided on our destination for today.  Frank suggested Vilar de Barrio (25 km) and Laurel countered with Albergueria (18 km).  At that moment, we read a comment on our blog from a friend who recommended that we stop at Albergueria, if possible.  Discussion over:  we would go to Albergueria and Frank and Yuric would go to Vilar de Barrio.

Our shorter stage meant a later start and the pouring rain did not hurry us up in the morning.  The downhill walk to Laza was wet but by the time we stopped for coffee in a bar that Laurel spied, the rain had quit.  It was an easy Galician walk until it wasn’t.  Out of the mist our challenge appeared and we spent the next 2 1/2 hours meeting it.  UP!  That is all that needs to be said.  We walked into the stone village of Albergueria at 12:30 and were met by the hospitalero, Roberto.  Check in was quick and we had a drink with Yuric, who was passing through, before laundry, showers and siesta.  Later, sitting in the albergue bar, with the walls and ceiling covered with pilgrim autographed Camino scallop shells, listening to vintage Bruce Springsteen, and six locals discussing politics, soccer and life, we both were grateful for Lea’s advice.

  1. Good thing the rain stopped before the uphill climb. The bar looks interesting.
